January is National Walk Your Dog Month so let's make your walks more enjoyable for you and your dog.

Be confident. Your dog will appreciate your confident body language. Head up, shoulders back, and your dog is walking with you. Encourage your dog to walk by your side, and if your dog pulls ahead, encourage him to return to your side with a yummy treat and praise.

Practice leash walking lessons. Choosing the right leash for your dog will make walking easier and finding one that you're comfortable holding will make it good for you too. A six-foot leash is a good length for walking your dog, and remember to keep moving so your dog doesn't get distracted. The leash is to communicate and practicing to have a loose leash will make your walks more fun. Practice polite leash walking and toss in some short training sessions on the trails too. Remember frequent, short sessions with low stress are best. Again, reward your dog with treats and praise when he stays by your side.

Bring supplies. Carry along poop bags for cleaning up after your dog. Bring along water for you and your dog. Dogs can drink water by lapping it from your cupped hands, or you can carry a collapsible water bowl, and some dogs like drinking from your water bottle. Remember to bring bite-sized treats for rewarding good behavior or because you have a good dog!

Variety is the spice of life. Make your walks more fun by going to new locations or taking different routes. You could set a goal to walk in each park in your community and once those are done start walking in other cities. If your dog is comfortable with other dogs, you could set up a walking group to explore new locations.

Know how far to go. How much walking is the right amount for your dog? Like so many things, it depends. Consider are your dog’s size and how long his legs are, the breed, age, overall health and where you are walking. Keep an eye on your dog, and if they're slowing down or panting, you've probably gone far enough.

Most of all, enjoy your walk, you’ll be glad you took the time!

Summertime is fun, and if you're careful in the hot weather, you and your pets are in for a great time! Our pets aren't as well adapted to the elements as wild animals are, and our companions can be as susceptible to extreme temps as much as their owners are. What that means for your pet is when temperatures get extreme, pet safety should be your primary concern.

Five ways to stay safe while enjoying summer with your pet:

Respect the heat. People aren't the only ones that may be overwhelmed by a hot summer. We can sweat, but our pets have limited ability to deal with high temperatures. Instead of sweating, our dogs release heat through their paw pads and by panting. On a hot day that may not be enough to keep them safe. Humans can sweat through all of the skin on their body, and we're able to cool down more effectively. One big concern for pets is dehydration, make sure you and your pets are well hydrated. Pets that are at higher risk include pets with flat faces like pugs and bulldogs which aren't able to pant as efficiently as animals with longer noses. Senior and overweight animals are more susceptible to heatstroke too. Another reason to keep your pets fit and trim. Always allow your pets to have access to plenty of fresh, cool water.

Safely keep bugs away. Bugs! There's a reason they're called that! Ticks and other summer insects can carry diseases, and often the treatment to prevent them creates problems for pets. Another summer pet safety issue is the presence of ticks and other summer insects. Beyond bugs, lawns can also be dangerous to your companions. Fertilizers and pesticides may keep a lawn looking plush, but those chemicals can be hazardous for your pet. Watch out for the little yard signs for yards that have chemical treatments on them. Talk with your veterinarian about the best ways to protect your pet from fleas, ticks, and other summer insects.

Keep an eye out for antifreeze. Antifreeze can leak out of cars when they overheat, potentially leaving antifreeze puddles on the ground. The sweet taste of antifreeze may tempt your pet to lick up the fluid. Once a pet ingests this toxic substance, it is potentially lethal. Pay attention when you're outside, and make sure your pets stay clear of any antifreeze.

Sunscreen. Some pets, particularly those with short fine hair and pink skin, may be susceptible to sunburn. Talk with your veterinarian about sunscreen products that are safe for your pets and remember to apply the sunscreen regularly. Do not use sunscreen or insect repellents that are not explicitly designed for use on animals. Certain sunscreens can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and lethargy in pets.

Practice water safety. Having your pet be safe in and around the water is about planning. Many dogs enjoy pools or the beach and swimming can be fun, but watch your pets anytime they are in or near the water. Even strong swimmers could get into trouble getting out of a pool, or by getting trapped by ropes and other obstacles. There are many high-quality dog life vests, and as long as you teach your dog to enjoy wearing one, they can provide years of water enjoyment.

Warm weather pet safety isn't tricky, it just takes a little thought, planning and paying attention. Protect your pets from too much heat, sun, and other summer dangers and enjoy your time together.

Raji is one of our top happy customers! He is quite the chewer, and
routinely dominates antler chews much larger than the recommended minimum size
for his stature. The post below is about Raji, written by Shelley
Peterson.

Raji is a miniature Australian Shepherd and we got him from a
breeder in Wisconsin. We couldn’t decide on a name so we kept the one the
breeder gave him. They told us they named all the puppies after a Packer’s
player so Raji is named after the player BJ Raji. Raji has an endless amount of
energy and the only time he takes a break is to chew his bones. That is the
only way to keep him calm for a short period of time. He is an extremely smart
dog and learns very fast. He gets used to the routine in the morning before we
leave. We will brush our teeth or put a bag by the door and he will be waiting
in his kennel for us to shut the door and give him a treat.

He can do some tricks such as sit, down, stay, shake, circle,
and roll over. He has been to puppy training, along with intermediate, and
agility class. We thought it would be a good idea for him to wear off some of
his energy at agility class. Raji’s favorite thing to do is play fetch. He
could do this 24/7 and keeps going even if he gets a little worn out. If you’re
ever in the mood to play fetch with him all you have to do is tell him to go
find his ball and he will come to you ready to play. You will never be bored
with him because he is by your side all the time. He is shy at first when he
meets new people but we are working on that. He also loves giving puppy kisses
once he gets to know you.

addict. Ollie is one of the top antler consumers, if not THE top consumer, that
Chew My Antlers caters to.

Ollie is absolutely crazy about
antlers. He chews them constantly, likes to carry them around in his mouth like
cigars, and even brings them to bed. Ollie is described as the world’s happiest
puppy, and just plain silly. I’ve been told he also has a thing for owls, but
professionally speaking, it is not a known side-effect of antler chewing.

Ollie
is an American Kennel Club show dog, and half way to his conformation
championship. One thing (of many) that Ollie has been complimented on by AKC
judges in the show ring is how white and clean his teeth are… which IS a known
side effect of antler chewing. Meet Ollie and see him at a Minnesota AKC show
near you and see for yourself! He was bred by Kay Nierengarten of Northwind Whippets, who’s been breeding, showing, and coursing
Whippets since 1980. Check out their website if you want to know more about
Whippets or possibly get one for yourself.

In addition to his battles with
antler addiction and living the AKC show life, Ollie is also an accomplished
athlete. Ollie finished his Field Champion Title in ASFA (American Sighthound Field Association) Lure Coursing Saturday October 5th and was
awarded Best in Field, meaning he was the top competitor there beating all
other breeds including Greyhounds, Salukis, Basenjis, and other champion
Whippets. Ollie’s coursing success is primarily attributed to his coach Lisa,
and partially attributed to his obsessive antler chewing. While chewing Chew My
Antlers elk antler dog chews is known to have performance enhancing effects, it
is undetectable by modern science.

Pictures of Ollie coursing

he became a local celebrity at All About Dogs Day at the Minnesota Landscape

Chew My Antlers had the pleasure of meeting Connie and
Molly at a Helping Paws Inc. Wag Walk & Run event.
Molly has a wonderful, heart-warming story, and she loves antler chews to
boot. Below is her story written by Connie Priesz:

My precious therapy partner is Molly. We have been a registered
therapy team since August 2011. We began training, socializing, and
having fun together since we met when she was just 3 months old. She has
such a wonderful personality and really loves people. I was thrilled when
we both successfully completed all the requirements to become a therapy team
when she was only 19 months old. Since I love to read and she loves
relaxing with children the R.E.A.D. program was a beautiful fit for us.

We began visiting the Carver County Libraries in Minnesota once a month.
During the summer, she visits the libraries two times a month for the
students to read to her on summer break. Last week, a boy in first grade
came to read to Molly. His father whispered in my ear that his son was having
trouble reading and that he did not like it too much. Then the boy proceeded to
read three books to Molly! This boy was pleased with his reading and did
not stumble on words as he read aloud. He was very proud of him. Molly
laid her head on his lap as he petted her and read. The boy said he would
practice so he can read to Molly again! This is just one of numerous examples
of how children enjoy reading to Molly and why we find it so rewarding.

Molly worked her magic again at a recent R.E.A.D. event at a local
elementary school. That very same night after the event the
coordinator of the event received this note from a parent.

My daughter read with Molly tonight and we were
amazed on how well she did! She is in kindergarten and has been
struggling with reading but there was something different tonight. Molly
definitely helped my daughter and it was neat to see! I'm just in
awe of how well my daughter did and how proud of herself she was when she was
all done! She is also going through speech therapy and is sometimes
not confident on her capabilities. What a difference we saw
tonight!!! What a great service you and the R.E.A.D. dogs offer!

In addition to R.E.A.D., each month Molly visits residents in a nearby
senior housing facility. A sign with her picture on it advertises our
visit to the residents. Sunday afternoons are
often a time when residents may especially miss their families or feel
lonely. Molly visits each person in the assembled circle of 6 to 13
residents that are there specifically to see her. She is petted, hugged, and
listens to many stories. I answer all kinds of questions about Molly, such as
how she is groomed, what she eats, and how she plays. It
is a great way to spend an afternoon for both the residents and Molly and me.

Recently we started working in the Spinal Cord Injury and Traumatic Brain
Injury clinics at the local veterans’ hospital. We assist the
patients to help meet their goals as designed by the hospital
therapist. We had the joyful experience of hearing one particular
veteran who had not spoken in quite some time say, “Hello Molly.” This was
truly one of our most rewarding experiences to date.

We enjoy working in our community to enhance the animal-human bond with
people of all ages. Molly so beautifully demonstrates her versatility
helping both young children and older adults. It is very
heartwarming and rewarding to meet new people and see my Molly also enjoy
interacting with them. Molly and I are looking forward to many more
years together volunteering and enjoying new experiences.

-Connie Priesz and Molly

To read more about Molly and to keep up with her activities, visit her Facebook page.
